Being the dreamer that I am, I like for things to happen as if they were meant to be. I like those chance encounters, those once in a lifetime moments when the planets align themselves just so and Fate works her magic.
But what do you when Ms. Fate appears to have gone on strike? After two months of break-ups and make-ups with T, I felt like something had to change. I wasn't happy and I was pretty sure he wasn't either. My neurotic behaviour was no longer amusing. It was just plain irritating, but I knew we would keep going through the on-again, off-again routine if something didn't change.
Since Ms. Fate was proving useless, I decided it was time to take matters into my own hands.
And late one night in mid-December, I found myself doing just that. I sat down with my laptop intent on finding myself a new job or some other means of broadening my horizons. Since my affair seemed doomed and my career wasn't faring much better, I felt I needed to find something to bring back my enthusiasm. But as I searched through various job sites and education programs, my optimism faded as I was constantly reminded of my limited funds and my even-more-limited schedule. Eventually I found myself wandering in a different direction.
Over the last two years, I had heard so much about the world of on-line dating through the blogs I had read, but truthfully never considered them. I hated the idea of ticking boxes; it all seemed so forced and unnatural. Plus, it felt so crass. I knew I was basically looking for an adulterous shag, but I didn't want animated images of twenty-something girls shaking their breasts as I filled out my profile. There had to be a more tasteful way of doing things.
And after a bit more hunting, I found a site dedicated to the likes of me - married and bored. I soon set up a profile and with a few tips that I have learned from the
blogsphere (
Master Riff, to be exact), I was well on my way to finding myself the perfect affair. Within minutes the
cyber winks and nudges began to make their way to my laptop. As many
bloggers have already touted, women reign supreme in the world of on-line dating. But it doesn't hurt to be a tall, blue-eyed
blonde either.
Perhaps it is me being naïve or maybe I just got lucky because the guys who contacted me were perfect gentlemen. Well, maybe not quite perfect but at least they didn't dive right in with questions about sex or whether I could meet them that evening. And not one of them sent me a cock shot! My faith in mankind had been restored. For the most part, my inbox was a stack of fairly well-written and witty messages querying how I had found myself in the world of adultery and what was I looking for in a potential suitor.
And that made me laugh. I had never really thought about it. My relationship with T had come about because I liked his writing and I wanted to know the guy behind the blog. I hadn't really thought about what he would be like in real life but fortunately Ms. Fate was in a good mood that week because T was even better in person. But given that the first candidate was five inches shorter than me and had a moustache, I could tell that I wasn't going to be quite as lucky this time around. So with a page full of tick boxes in front of me, I started the process of defining what I was after. Within minutes, the page was complete and I clicked the 'Search' button. I had ticked my way to Mr. Right...
Or so I thought.
My search came back with nothing. Zero. Zilch. Zip. Not one single profile fit my criteria. Instead of a list of guys ready to rock my world, there was a polite message telling me I was being too picky and that I needed to expand my criteria a bit more.
And so I did.
And this time when I clicked 'Search', a list of candidates came back. One by one, I read their profiles and thought 'he might work' or 'he's a possibility' and promised to peek at just one more. But one more became a dozen more. And a dozen more after that. By the end of the night, I probably had read every profile of every man on this side of London over the age of 40. They were professional, they were educated, they were attractive, witty, intelligent, athletic, French, Italian... anything and everything a woman could want.
Except I didn't want any of them. I responded to a few emails politely but couldn't bring myself to take it any further. It all felt so forced and I had realised what I wanted didn't exist. My first unsuccessful search was Mr. Right and he was nowhere to be found. And I knew why.
The guy I was after had to be over 6'4" with hair that I could run my fingers through. He had to have a sense of humour but also know that hex isn't just something witch's do. Intelligent and well-read were also essential qualities - if he couldn't match me intellectually then he certainly wouldn't be allowed near my knickers. And he had to appreciate my ass, my legs, my love of shoes and my fascination with anal sex. But truthfully I couldn't think of any guy going anywhere near my delicate bits without a smile that was definitely naughty, but trustworthy too.
I soon realised that it was T that I was after, but with a few modifications. This T would live 30 miles away instead of 300 so that we could see each other all of the time. He wouldn't disappear on weekends and school holidays and he certainly wouldn't forget to call. But the best part is that he would know nothing of my struggles to make sense of my marriage or my neurotic
tendency to run when I get overwhelmed. And he would have a clean slate too. There would be no S and the
story of how he had loved her so, no reason for me to convince myself that I was just there to fill the void.
Once it became obvious what I was looking for, I knew that I couldn't possibly find it. I had gotten as close to perfect as Ms. Fate was going to allow and I had chosen to let it go. Rather than creating an even bigger mess, I decided to give infidelity a rest and let Ms. Fate take a well-deserved holiday. I stared at my profile one last time and smiled at what I had learned. I had seen enough to know that I could have another affair if I wanted one, but there was really only one that I wanted.
So I deleted my account and signed up for a writing class instead.

Hi its owl, I left an email for you!
:o)
wow...that's a post I can really connect with. Cheers :)
You should try a youngster maybe, for a bit of variety... ;-))
I can totally relate to this post. After the Maestro did his disappearing act I signed up to AFF. Unfortunately I did not have Riff's advice to hand and so made a fair few mistakes (cock shots abound). In the end, despite boiling the list down to two perfectly respectable, suitable men I came to the conclusion that if I couldn't have the maestro ... or someone else that came 'naturally' along I didn't want anyone.
So I applied to do a degree (full time) instead. (in tandem with running my established busines) I didn't think evening classes were quite 'strong' enough.
Actually, truth be told, the degree isn't strong enough either.
I wonder though if there is ever satisfaction?
It never hurts to look, and can be a way of thinking out loud.
I get the impression that it's a bit like trying on clothes . . . the excitement of a potential great find is there, but you might also leave the store empty-handed. Either way, it's still fun, isn't it?
You don't still have your listing, do you? I'd love to read it.
All ready for Burns Night, or do you not indulge in that bit of Scottish revelry?
XO
Fuck yeah, Cate. Besides if you're saying things like,
"He's a possibility," and "He might work," you will never be happy.
Any kind of affair, secret or public, should always be a matter of the heart. I personally couldn't do the "match me with some random horny person" method.
But then you knew that already, apparently I find my lovers right here.
Well, your first mistake was listening to that idiot Riff Dog!
Considering that I've been secretly (okay, not so secretly) hoping I could be your new lover, I was feeling encouraged as I started reading your requirements! Height, hair, and on rare occasions, a sense of humor - check, check, and check!
But then . . . unless "hex" is the plural of "heck," then I'm fading fast. And you say you're looking for a guy who appreciates your love of shoes? This is a man you're looking for, right? ;-)
~sigh~
Oh well. I guess that 5,000 mile thing would have been a problem anyway. ;-)
By the way, I'm glad you mentioned that most guys who emailed you were gentlemen. That was Claire's experience too. Almost all were nice guys (not always literate, but still nice.) And very few cock shots. Gentlemen. But reading what some women have written, I started wondering if that was really the norm.
Sometimes knowing that one *can* is enough.
It's like being in a grocery store that carries all your favorite foods with plenty of money.
You may only want peaches, but knowing you *could* get ice cream if you wanted it is pretty nice too. :)
I can only assume you will be teaching said writing class, right?
Who knows what Ms. Fate might hold in store for you yet...
You idealize the close distance lover, but I think it makes it a lot more difficult to compartmentalize and live a somewhat normal married life. I, for instance, have spent the whole week stealing moments with Big T during the day, and have accomplish NOTHING the whole week. It's a good thing I don't have a job and my husband has a very busy one to question what the hell I do with my free time. Laundry is still piled up, the house isn't very clean and I haven't even made my way to the gym once since before Christmas.
I agree on the height, the intelligence, the writing and the looks... you are picky, but so am I.
I think the biggest problem you have, and I know it b/c I have the same one, is that you will fall in love with such man and that's maybe what you're ultimately looking for... not just a sex partner.
Fate does a pretty damn good job once in a while. I think it's a good idea to leave things in those fateful hands.
Though it doesn't hurt to use your own once in a while, whether for writing or ... exploring.
I wanted to be pithy and end there, but suddenly I was reminded of that joke about the guy who wanted to win the lottery. He kept praying and praying to God for it. Years and years pass but no lottery win. He gets angry at God and curses him. God shoots back, presumably with some lightning and a bit of cloud, "Buy a fucking ticket, will you?"
Uh, no, no message, really. I still believe in fate. It's gotten me exactly where I am today.
Owl, glad you are ok - I was worried about you!
edens_dragon, thank you - it is always pleasing to learn that something I have written has had an impact. Much appreciated.
Semele, but I am not getting any younger and I really don't want some young hottie telling me that I am starting to sag!
B, it sounds like we have had very similar experiences, although I am quite pleased to have dodged the cock shots! But on a more serious note, there really is nothing like the rush you get from someone who really inspires. I don't think any course, job, project, etc. is ever going to give the same thrill. But I suspect that when you finish your degree, you will do great things and be very proud.
I keep telling myself I am going to write a book. It may never happen, but it sounds good and it keeps me going.
Jim, the profile is long gone. It was thrown together so quickly that I don't think it was anything impressive. I suspect the tall, blond thing was enough to get a few interested.
And I must admit that Burns Night is not anything significant down South. It might be up North. England is like two different countries in one.
ez cheese, I could not have put it better myself. Keep loving. It's what we both do best.
Riff, you may still get your wish. My husband would love to move back to North America and I have put San Diego/La Jolla on my list of acceptable places. So that puts me at about 50 miles instead of 5,000, right?
As for my shoe fetish - you don't have to wear them, just tell me I look hot in them and let me keep them on during sex. It's a little quirk that I have. Fortunately, T was willing to go along with it.
As for hex... it's geeky, that's all I am going to say.
And yes, every guy on the site I used was a gentleman. I was pleasantly surprised and would have seriously considered a few of them if I hadn't been so consumed with T.
Ms. I, great analogy. Just knowing you can can be very empowering.
Kyra, I am so not worthy but thank you for the compliment. I do hope I learn a thing or two and maybe it will affect what I write here.
Krazy, very good point. One thing that struck me as I thought of short vs. long-distance lovers is that when you are closer to each other you see each other often but not for very long. I almost always got to sleep with T and we could have dinner and talk and shag ourselves silly for the night. It was lovely. But it could only happen once every 3 of 4 weeks and sometimes longer. I think there are good and bad points to both arrangements. The most important thing is appreciating what you have got.
L.love the joke! And there is some truth to it too. My dad used to always say 'God helps those who help themselves'.
I think that sums up my relationship with Fate. I don't expect her to do everything for me, but sometimes she gives me a little help when I need it most.

Would you trade hex for height? I'm only 6' but I'm versatile in hex, octal, and binary :-)
Seriously, I enjoyed the post. I like reading about self discovery and figuring out things. I *really* enjoyed the fact you didn't spend the post despondent about your dilemma. You made a plan, it didn't work, and you made another plan which has promise.
Excellent! That rocks! Fate also helps those who help themselves. Now, on to wondering who will be in class with you...
That's exactly right. I wish I could spend one night with my T, and I know it will probably never happen. Enjoy what you have, I think you have something special in there.
San Diego/La Jolla? Oh, how you tease me!
I shall start learning to play Hex immediately and will brush up on my shoe noticing skills in anticipation!
God-dammit. Like Arthur, I can do hex, but it appears I'm 4" too short (with my height, anyway).
I'm far too picky too, and limited in opportunity (and too tight to pay on AM and the like) so struggling with fate too.
But the advice about not sending cock-shots may help in future. I normally just reply with "Check out my junk - and get your mouth ready" and a close-up. You're saying that's not the best approach?
Ah well. Maybe when we meet for that coffee you can bring some of your writing with you. :)
Cate.....I have been a quiet follower of your blog for a while now. I think we may be kindred spirits and today is a special day for me as well. It is my bloginceptionversary (bad sorry). There are some strong women in this community who have inspired me to write. I count you among them and while I admittedly do not know where it will go thank you for inspiring.
Arthur, Ahhh, a man who knows what hex is! I really don't have that much affection for it. It is just that I am 25 in hex instead of 37. Sounds good to me!
I suspect my class will be a bunch of middle-aged folk tired of their careers, looking for a change. But who knows!
Krazy, I have got my fingers crossed that you will get your wish! And I think I have finally got mine.
Riff, does this mean I can get a personal tour?!
Mendicatus, Rachel always says 'there is never a pot so crooked that there isn't a lid to fit it' so maybe you just haven't found the right woman yet?!
Southerngirl, I am so flattered. I hope you enjoy writing for me at has been such a tremendous learning experience aboug who I am and what I want.
